Virtual Private Network

A VPN is your own network that operates over the public network or Internet utilising low cost and simple connections. It is private in the sense that no one, apart from the locations you specify, can use or access your network as it is hidden from everyone else who uses the public network.

A typical VPN will be configured using a mix of Leased Line, ADSL, and Dial-Up connections to provide the appropriate connections to each end-point.

Here's an idea of how a VPN works. A customer who has several offices throughout the UK wanted all their staff, in every office, to be able to access the information and systems at head office. The information is key to the daily working of the business and is being updated continually by the staff in all their locations. One way to achieve this securely would have been to link the offices with leased lines, but that was very expensive to establish and maintain. The answer was a VPN. The head office and major local branches are permanently connected to Colloquium by ADSL and leased line. Smaller branches connect to Colloquium, when they require, by ISDN or dial up.

Connecting different locations to each other is nothing unusual, after all that's what happens on the Internet all the time. However, what makes the network Private, and restricted to only the locations you specify, is the special adaptations that Colloquium makes to the network. By changing the configuration of the branch and head office computers together with particular changes to Colloquium's network you can have your own private network. Security can be further enhanced by employing encryption to the virtual links between each location, industry standard IPsec connections along with SHA, DES, and RSA protocols are all supported. It is both a secure and cost effective means of providing communication throughout your businesses locations.

Pricing of a VPN is very variable dependent upon the information movement, system requirement and geography as well as the number of locations. Discuss your requirements with us and we'll be able to give a breakdown of the full benefits of VPN as well as budget costs.
