Wireless

Wireless Internet connections add flexibility to the way that you work removing the need to be permanently connected and even allowing you to work whilst moving.

The two main types of wireless access are WiFi which comes built-in to most laptops and 3G which utilises the mobile phone networks.

WiFi normally provides provides for connections over short distances of up to 100M although this will be reduced by the presence of buildings, people, and plants. WiFi is ideal for providing connectivity to people who have to be able to work from a number of known locations such as a home office, head office, and branch offices. Security controls ensure that only authorised users can make the connection to your network and that your data remains secure.

3G is used by most PDAs and is built-in to some high spec laptops, but most users will require a 3G card or adaptor to make connection. Normally these are backward compatible with the older GPRS technology which means that Internet connectivity is available anywhere that you can get a mobile phone signal. 3G relies on the mobile phone networks and as a consequence can be very expensive to use for any extended period of heavy use.

Colloquium have a great deal of experience of using wireless connections to provide Internet connectivity to areas where traditional ADSL connections are not available because of the distance from the exchange or the available connections are not fast enough. Fixed wireless links can be a very cost effective alternative to leased lines for many users. We would can show you working examples of wireless access networks and discuss how these technologies might be of use in your circumstances.
